To define a performance by Lucy Ward you can’t do better that the festival director who wrote: “Lucy has a breath-taking presence on stage. Her totally unpretentious outlook and her warmth melts the hearts of audiences wherever she performs. The peon of praise continued with “Her disarming personality, strong, pitch perfect delivery and the maturity of her songs can reduce an audience to tears, but a Lucy Ward set will always send you away feeling uplifted.” After getting her first guitar at the age of 14, Lucy ventured into the semi-secret world of English folk clubs around her home in Derby and was entranced by the traditional songs she heard, eventually getting gigs in her own right. She came to the attention of the wider UK folk scene five years ago when she was nominated for the BBC Young Folk Award. A debut album later she was named by MOJO Magazine as “Britfolk’s most vibrant and forthright new young talent” She went on to win the Horizon Award for best newcomer in the 2012 Folk Awards and released a second album to widespread acclaim later the same year. Her growing success  –  on record and in person  –  led to a nomination this year for the prestigious BBC Folk Singer of the Year award, an accolade made even more special by the fact that at 24 she was the youngest nominee in the history of the Awards.
